Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay developed a social conscious through her mother. While DuVernay was raised within Compton with her parents, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the house and examining the trash from one of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
